DONG SHOULDERMASK

Wood, fiber and shell | h 129 cm | 50,8 in. | 20th century

description

The Dong or Dung live in Zing LGA in Taraba state and some live in Mayo Belwa LGA in Adamawa state.

The figures I encountered were pieces that were offered to soldiers by the Dong people to rescue them from the Boko Haram terrorists. They were afraid they would otherwise be destroyed. The art of the Dong is extravagant. The shoulder masks are both impressive in size and style. A typical feature is the open mouth that you can also find in the art of the neighbouring Jenjo tribe.
