EKOI AKWANSHI

Copper alloy | h 90 cm | 35,4 in. | 17th century

description

An amazing and very rare copper alloy monolith or Akwanshi attributed to the Koi tribe who live in Cross River state in Nigeria.

The Akwanshi story on itself is amazing because of the presence of the basaltic stone monoliths. They were first mentioned at the beginning of the 1900’s. The figures are said to represent ancestors, or more specifically, legendary figures.
They have been found in a small area around Ikom in Cross River state. They are known variously as Akwanshi, Atal or Alaptal.
