The Gwari or Gbagyi are a large tribe scattered over Kaduna, Niger, Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa states in Nigeria. They are divided into two main groups. The eastern group is called Gbagyi-Ngenge or Gbagyi-Matai and they are more populous. The western group is called Gbagyi-Nkwa or Gbagyi-Yamma. The western and eastern groups speak different languages.
It is argued that archaeological findings agree that the Gwari and their crafts are some of the direct continuations of the people of the Nok culture.
The maternity figures of the Gwari are very famous and with good reason as this magnificent maternity statue shows.
