IFE STATUE

Copper alloy | h 41 cm | 16,1 in. | 16th century

description

A centuries old Ife figure. According to Frank Willet who published an article about the Benin museum collection in the African Arts magazine these copper alloy figures are from Ife origin.
The figure described in the Willet article misses a head and wears a ram-head hipmask and is carrying a disc-headed staff which is similar to the staff held by a Tada figure. In his left hand is a leaf a motive commonly found in the Ife sculpture in terracotta and also in the sculptures excavated at Owo by Ekpo Eyo (1972) which have elements in common with both Ife and Benin.
The figure is tested with a TL-test to be 400 years old.
