IJO MASK

Wood, rope and mirror | h 87 cm | 34,3 in. | 20th century

description

A typical Ijo horizontal mask. The Ijo, Ijaw or Izon are living mainly in the Niger delta (the area where the oil is found and due to this oil exploitation a lot of expats stayed in the area and the art became well known). These famous horizontal Ijo masks, often representing animals living in the water like the hippopotamus illustrate the connection of the Ijo with the delta and the water. This connection is shared with the other Niger delta tribes in Nigeria like the Isoko, Itsekiri, Urhobo and Kalabari.
